Which material, ceramic, fireclay, granite or granite composite, will give me the best balance of durability and that bright white look?

Ceramic and fireclay give the brightest, glossy white finish and a classic look, fireclay is thicker and more chip-resistant than standard ceramic, which is why you see it on Belfast and Butler sinks like the Rangemaster Farmhouse and Eastlake Butler ranges. Granite and granite composite offer superb resistance to heat, stains and scratches and usually come in a softer arctic or pure white with a matt or lightly textured finish. If you want a traditional, shiny white that suits a period kitchen go fireclay or ceramic; if you need hardwearing, family-proof performance choose granite composite or granite.

With so many styles, inset, undermount, Belfast/apron front and freestanding, which style will suit different kitchen looks and workflows?

Inset sinks are versatile and sit on a worktop lip, suiting most modern and shaker kitchens; undermount sinks, such as the Reginox Amsterdam or Elleci Quadra, give a seamless look with stone worktops. Belfast or apron-front sinks like the Rangemaster Classic or RAK Jacklyn create a strong farmhouse feature and offer very deep bowls ideal for large pans. Freestanding or cleaner's sinks (Eastlake Cleaner's with legs) work well in utility rooms where you need a robust, standalone unit.

How do I decide between single, 1.5 and double bowl layouts for everyday use?

Single bowls (the most common here) suit compact kitchens and large pots, while 1.5 bowls give a smaller secondary bowl for rinsing and a main bowl for washing, good for busy families and many products in the 1000 x 500mm size range. Double bowls are handy if you regularly soak and wash separately and are available in Belfast and inset styles for bigger kitchens. If you want a draining area, look at models with a left or right-hand drainer or those described as "none" if you prefer a separate drainer board.

What sink sizes will fit standard base units and how do I match one to my worktop space?

The range shows sinks from compact widths around 540–560mm (typical for 600mm base units) up to 1000–1099mm for larger base units and worktops; common deep dimensions are 200–299mm for bowl depth but you'll also find very deep options up to 600–699mm. a 540 x 440mm undermount single bowl like the Rangemaster Oridian fits a narrower base, while a 1000 x 500mm granite sink like the Rangemaster Elements suits a 1000mm run and gives generous bowl area. Use the sink's overall width and length as a guide so the bowl sits comfortably on your intended worktop space.

How should I look after a white sink so it stays bright and avoids staining or dulling?

For ceramic and fireclay, clean with a soft cloth and mild detergent and avoid abrasive powders that can scratch the glaze; these finishes are glossy so they clean up easily. Granite and granite composite respond well to gentle, non-caustic cleaners and a soft cloth; avoid bleach or harsh scouring pads that can dull a matt composite surface. Wipe down after use to prevent watermarks on pure or arctic white finishes, and deal with spills promptly, rinse after cooking with acidic ingredients to keep the white pristine.
