How often should you replace a kitchen tap filter and what are the clear signs it needs changing?

Most filters need replacing at regular intervals, usually around every 12 months, and many manufacturers design them to be easy to swap. You'll notice a change in taste or smell, brown or cloudy water, or a reduced flow from your boiling or filtered tap when a cartridge is due. For peace of mind you can keep a spare: the Insinkerator F701-R twin pack gives you an extra cartridge ready to fit.

How do I know which replacement filter will fit my tap?

Match the brand and model of your tap first, the range includes Grohe, Sauber, InSinkErator and Reginox, then compare the physical size and connection type. Filters in our range list heights (92, 188, 234, 265, 280, 304 and 315 mm) and diameters (52, 64, 70, 81.28, 88 and 151 mm), and Grohe Blue shows small and medium cartridges plus a separate filter head. A quick measure of your existing cartridge or noting the manufacturer/model will tell you whether you need a Sauber the current product price replacement, an Insinkerator cartridge, or a Grohe Blue small/medium unit.

Which filter type is best if I have hard water and worry about limescale?

For hard water you want a cartridge that addresses scale, the range includes specific calcium/descaler-type filters as well as carbon cartridges. Carbon filters are excellent for removing tastes and odours, while a calcium-style or 3in1 filter (the Reginox Amanzi 3in1 for boiling hot water taps) will help reduce limescale build-up as well as improve flavour. If you have a boiling water tap, a 3in1 or calcium option will protect internal parts and keep water tasting better over time.

Are there cost-effective options and do multi-packs make sense?

Yes, prices vary considerably, from at a lower price point for many Sauber cartridges up to over the current product price for a Grohe Blue medium cartridge, so you can budget according to your system. Multi-packs such as the Insinkerator twin pack at the current product price give you an immediate spare and can lower the hassle of mid-year replacements. If you want to keep annual running cost low, a single-brand carbon cartridge at a lower price point is a common, economical choice.

What's the difference between a filter cartridge and a filter head, and when might I need the head?

The cartridge is the replaceable element that removes impurities; the filter head is the connector or housing that secures the cartridge to your tap's plumbing. Grohe Blue products in our range separate small and medium cartridges from a filter head priced on its own, so you would replace just the cartridge most of the time but buy the head if it's damaged or if you change cartridge size. if your Grohe system currently uses a small cartridge but you upgrade to a medium, you may need the filter head as well to ensure a proper fit.
