How do I decide between a pull-out, swivel, fixed or flexible spout for my kitchen sink?

Think about how you use your sink. A pull-out or flexible spout gives a spray function and reach for rinsing veg and filling pots across a double bowl, while a swivel spout is ideal if you need to reach both sides of a sink without extra spray. A fixed spout is neater and works well with a single-bowl sink or slim breakfast prep area. For tall pans, choose a swan neck or high-arc spout, such as several Sauber swan-neck models shown.

What's the difference between single lever, twin lever, cross head and sensor controls, and which is best for me?

Single-lever mixers give effortless one-handed temperature and flow control and suit busy family kitchens. Twin lever or cross head controls offer a more traditional look and separate hot and cold operation if you prefer independent handling. Sensor or touch taps are best when you want a hygienic, hands-free option and water savings. If you want fast, precise temperature changes while cooking, single-lever is usually the most practical.

Which finish will stay looking good and match my kitchen style?

Chrome is the most common finish here and gives a classic, bright look but can show watermarks; brushed steel, brushed nickel or brushed brass hide fingerprints and suit modern or industrial kitchens. Black and copper/bronze taps create a bold, contemporary statement and pair nicely with matte worktops. Match the tap finish to your cabinet handles and appliances for a cohesive look, such as brushed steel taps complement stainless sinks and appliances.

Are boiling-water or 3-in-1 taps worth the extra cost, and which brands offer them?

Boiling-water and 3-in-1 taps give instant hot water for drinks and cooking and can save time in a busy household; models from InSinkErator and Rangemaster are great options we have online, with prices typically higher than standard mixers (InSinkErator HC1100 around £249). They often require an additional hole or a triple-lever configuration for safe operation, so they suit kitchens where you want convenience and have the space. If you make lots of hot drinks or want to speed up cooking, they're a very practical upgrade.

How many tap holes do most kitchen mixers need and when do I need extra holes?

Most mixers on offer use a single tap hole so a standard single-hole sink or worktop is fine for most purchases. You'll need two or more holes for twin-lever traditional mixers, separate filtered-water taps, or dedicated boiling-water fittings; there are specific two-, three- and four-hole models available. A 3-in-1 boiling-water tap may require an extra hole for the filter or safety controls, so check the tap's hole requirement before you buy.
