Inset kitchen sinks are by far the most common type of sink installation. A section is cut into the worktop that’s smaller than the overall size of your sink, which is then lowered into the worktop to create the inset look. Because of this type of installation, these kitchen sinks can also be called top-mounted or sit-on sinks.

How do you decide between a single, 1.5 or double bowl inset sink?

Think about how you use the sink day to day. A single bowl gives you one large space for washing big pans and suits minimal layouts, while a 1.5 bowl gives a main bowl plus a smaller second bowl for prep or rinsing without taking much extra space. A double bowl is handy if you regularly wash and rinse or want to keep food prep separate from washing up. if you bake often and soak trays, a double or 1.5 bowl lets you soak on one side while using the other.

Which material will give you the best mix of durability and easy care?

Granite composite and stainless steel are the most practical choices in this range: granite composite is hard-wearing, stain-resistant and comes in matt colours like black or silvery tones, while stainless steel is hygienic, quick to clean and suits modern kitchens. Ceramic and fireclay (19 each) offer a classic glossy look that resists staining but are heavier and can chip if knocked. Glass is available but rare and best if you want a statement piece rather than heavy daily use.

Should you buy a sink with a drainer, and how do you choose the drainer side?

Decide whether you want an integrated draining surface or prefer a separate drainer on the worktop; 56 sinks have no drainer, while 138 are reversible (left or right), 19 are left-only and 23 right-only. Pick the drainer side to match your routine and neighbouring appliances, choose a right-hand drainer if your dishwasher sits to the right so wet items are easy to load. If you favour a clean, minimalist look and use a drain rack on the worktop, a no-drainer model keeps the sink area simple.

What sink dimensions are most common and how does depth affect use?

Many inset sinks in this range sit in the 1000–1099mm length band, with plenty also in 800–899mm and 500–599mm, so you can find sizes for both long and compact runs. Bowl depth matters for capacity and splash control, most models here have depths in the 200–299mm band, which is roomy enough for pans without excessive splashing. If you wash large cookware often, look for a deeper bowl in that 200–299mm range for better capacity.

How do you pick a finish that suits your kitchen style?

Match finish to the look you want: silver/stainless finishes work well in contemporary kitchens, black and grey sinks give strong contrast with pale worktops, and white, cream or classic fireclay/ceramic suit traditional or farmhouse schemes. a black granite composite sink creates a striking contrast against pale quartz, while a white ceramic sink complements shaker-style cabinetry.
