What are the real differences between induction, ceramic and gas hobs, and which is best for you?

Induction hobs heat cookware directly and are the fastest and most energy-efficient, but you must use compatible pans; a model with a Flex Zone gives you more flexible pan placement. Ceramic hobs use radiant heat under glass, stay hot longer and are simple to clean, making them a good mid-range option. Gas hobs give instant visual flame control and work with any pan, which many cooks prefer for precise heat; gas on glass combines that control with a smooth, easy-clean surface. If you want speed and safety choose induction, for fuss-free cleaning choose ceramic, and for traditional flame control choose gas.

What width hob should you buy for a typical kitchen?

The most common width is 60cm, many models on offer are 60cm, and it fits standard worktops and cabinets in most kitchens. If you want extra burners or a wider cooking surface look at 75cm, 80cm or 90cm models; 75cm and 80cm hobs are available for 5-burner layouts. Pick 60cm for a typical family kitchen, 75–80cm for more simultaneous cooking, and 90cm only if you have a large run of worktop and want a statement hob.

How many cooking zones do you really need?

Four zones is the most common option and suits most households where you cook two to four dishes at once. Choose five zones if you entertain often or run large recipes that need several pans simultaneously. If you regularly make simple meals or have limited space, a three- or two-zone hob is fine; a 6-zone model is only really necessary for very busy kitchens.

Which control types and safety features should you look for?

Controls range from rotary dials to touch sliders and twist pads; rotary dials are tactile and work with wet hands, while touch controls are sleeker and easier to wipe clean. Look for a residual heat indicator so you can see hot zones, and a child lock if you have young children. If you want precise temperature steps for simmering, slider or touch-slider controls give finer adjustment than basic rotary knobs.

Are venting induction hobs worth the extra cost, and when should you consider gas on glass?

Venting induction hobs combine an induction surface with a built-in extractor, making them excellent for island cooking or where you cannot fit a ceiling hood, they can be pricier, as shown by higher-priced venting models. Gas on glass gives you the instant flame control of gas but on a smooth, easy-clean glass surface, so it's a good compromise if you prefer gas but want a modern look. If you need an integrated extractor and fast induction cooking, go for venting induction; if you must have an open flame and prefer easier cleaning than enamel, choose gas on glass.
