Which material is best for a busy kitchen or family bathroom — porcelain, ceramic or natural stone?

Porcelain is the most practical choice for high-traffic kitchens and family bathrooms because it's dense, hard-wearing and the majority of the range here is porcelain. You'll find many glazed porcelain options in 600 x 600mm and 300 x 600mm sizes that resist stains and moisture well, the Amiata Artemis or Ardsley ranges. Ceramic is fine for walls or lighter-use floors, while natural stone looks beautiful but usually needs sealing and more maintenance. If you want low upkeep and long life, stick with porcelain.

What tile size will make my small bathroom look bigger or my open-plan kitchen feel balanced?

In a small bathroom, larger-format tiles like 600 x 600mm or rectangular 300 x 600mm laid with fewer grout lines will visually open the space. For an open-plan kitchen, you can use the same 600 x 600mm porcelain across the floor to create a continuous, seamless look. If you want texture or a period look, smaller formats such as 250 x 250mm patterned tiles like the Amiata Seurat make a striking feature without overwhelming a small room.

How do finishes and textures affect slip resistance and cleaning?

Smooth, polished and gloss finishes reflect light and look luxurious but show watermarks and can be more slippery when wet, as with the polished Ardsley 600 x 600mm. Matt, sugar or textured finishes give better grip and hide marks; the Ardsley matt or sugar finishes are sensible for bathroom floors. Glazed tiles are easier to wipe clean, while unglazed porcelain offers better natural slip grip but may need a slightly different cleaning routine.

Can I use the same tile on both walls and floors, and when would that work well?

Yes, many of the ranges are specifically wall & floor tiles, so you can match a single tile throughout for a cohesive scheme; the Amiata Lamos 600 x 600mm and Kallone 600 x 1200mm are examples. Use the same tile on both surfaces to make a small bathroom feel larger or to carry a look into a wet shower area. Just confirm the tile's suitability for floors (check durability rating), porcelain wall-and-floor tiles are usually rated for both.

I want a statement floor without overpowering the room — should I choose patterned, marble effect or plain tiles?

Patterned tiles like the Amiata Seurat 250 x 250mm make an immediate feature and work well in small areas or as a central zone, whereas marble-effect tiles such as the Kallone 600 x 1200mm give subtle luxury with natural veining. Plain stone-effect or neutral greys and creams are excellent if you prefer a calm backdrop you can accessorise. Pick patterned for a focal point, marble-effect for elegance, or plain for versatility.
