Which hob type should you choose — induction, ceramic or a venting induction hob?

If you want the fastest, most energy-efficient cooking and precise heat control, induction is the top choice, it makes up the largest part of the range. Ceramic hobs are simpler and often less expensive, with a few 60cm ceramic options if you prefer a traditional glass-ceramic surface. Venting induction hobs combine induction with a built‑in downdraft extractor, ideal if you have an island or cannot fit an overhead hood, though they are pricier.

What width and number of cooking zones will suit a typical kitchen?

A 60cm hob with four cooking zones is the most common and fits standard kitchen cabinets, making it a good choice for most families. If you cook for larger groups or want more flexibility, 80cm or 90cm hobs with five zones give extra space for big pans and simultaneous dishes. For a compact kitchen, a 52–56cm or three‑zone hob can save space while still handling everyday meals.

How do controls and safety features differ, and which are easiest to use?

You'll find a variety of controls, touch sliders, touch buttons, twist pads, rotary dials and even a magnetic knob, each with its feel; touch controls are sleek and easy to wipe clean, while knobs and twist pads give tactile feedback and work well if you prefer physical controls. Most models include child locks and residual heat indicators (about 57 have child locks and 60 show residual heat), which help prevent accidents and show when zones are still hot. If you have children, pick a hob with both a strong child lock and clear heat indicators.

Will your current cookware work with an induction hob?

Induction needs magnetic cookware, so cast iron and magnetic stainless steel work well, whereas lighter aluminium or non-magnetic stainless will not. Test a pan with a fridge magnet, if it sticks, the pan will work on induction. If you don't want to buy new pots, a few models such as plug‑in Prima induction hobs also give affordable ways to try induction without rewiring.

When is a venting induction hob worth the extra cost?

Choose a venting induction hob if you have an island or open-plan kitchen where an overhead extractor would spoil sight lines, because these models pull steam and odours downwards, keeping the room clearer. They are more expensive, examples in the range include 60cm and 80–90cm venting models from Neff and Hotpoint, but they remove the need for a separate hood and give a very neat finish. If you cook a lot of frying or strong aromas and want a clean, minimalist look, the extra investment often pays off.
