Adey MagnaClean Professional 22mm Filter
Features and Benefits:
Why have MagnaClean?
We live in an age of high efficiency boilers, but for many years little attention has been placed on the cleanliness of central heating systems.
The majority of systems suffer from black iron oxide contamination, which creates thick sludge deposits that are the result of corrosion taking place within radiators and other metallic components. The oxide particles can range from very large to sub-micron, with the latter leaching into the system water continuously during use. These particles bond to all components, often causing premature failure of pumps and valves. When they contaminate the boiler heat exchanger and pipework, dramatic efficiency losses result. Tests have shown that even a minimal build up results in a serious drop in boiler efficiency!
The Magnaclean filter will provide many years of protection, maintaining the high efficiency of your heating system, resulting in financial benefit and increased reliability, and is backed by a two year limited guarantee.
How it Works
MagnaClean Professional has been carefully designed to remove particulate from suspension, whilst allowing 100% flow rate at all times.
Installation is simple, with each isolation valve rotating through 360°C, supporting any number of location options. These valves have been specially designed for use with Magnaclean and have high quality P.T.F.E seals.
An added advantage to installers is the ‘Pro-Fill’ air vent built in to the lid. This special vent incorporates a unique one-way valve, allowing the installer to inject corrosion inhibitor chemicals directly into the Magnaclean without the need to isolate anything. Just remove the air vent screw, inject the chemical and replace the air vent screw. Simple!
Magnaclean® is a powerful, compact magnetic filter with a unique swirl chamber designed to remove 100% of suspended Iron Oxide and other particulate from the water circulating through the heating system. Unlike typical Y-strainer filters which clog up and experience a dramatic reduction in flow performance, Magnaclean® maintains full flow rates at all times, and is so powerful it will retain at least 50X the amount of debris on its easily removed sheath. The incredibly tough ‘Glass fibre reinforced Nylon’ shell is almost unbreakable.
Incorporated into the lid is a special air vent, which allows installers to quickly and easily add corrosion inhibiting chemicals without the need to isolate the filter. Simply unscrew the vent nipple (one-way valve shuts off), connect the chemical adaptor (supplied with all concentrates) and introduce the liquid directly into the heart of Magnaclean, where it will quickly disperse into the circulating water. Replace the vent. Job done!
Initially available to suit 22mm pipe work. A twin 300mm high unit built onto a special plinth is available, that has been specifically designed for installers who Power-Flush systems, to prevent contaminants released during the flushing process from entering the heating boiler.

I fitted a magna clean just over a month ago i have just
checked the product and a could not believe the amount
of sluge that had built up on the fitting in such a small time.
As my pipework is 20 years old i would recomend this item 100%.
This is the first time I have seen this type of filter and I was a bit scepticle if it would work, having seen the on line video, I was convinced it was the best thing to fit, it had been recomended by my British gas engineer. On receipt of the unit I set about looking where to fit it in my system, as I was limited in space in my airing cupboard and it soon became apparent which was the best location. So I made up all of the fittings, so that when I drained the system all I had to do was fit it. Overall the time spent was about 3 hours, including putting in an inhibitor concentrate and filling the system running it for about 1 hour to bleed the air out of it. I date (06/09/09) I have not checked the filter for the sludge?. If you plan the fitting, anyone should be able to fit one of these units with the minimum of plumbing skills and tools.
Pros: easy to check and clean, full protection of boiler (supported by inhibitor)
Cons: valves drip when closed during cleaning
Researched these devices and settled on the Magnaclean for build quality and the info on the maker's website. Fitted it no problem to brand new system (HEP20 piping, steel rads, S/S condensing boiler) and let it run for four weeks. Drained down to fit extra rad and had a look in the Magnaclean. Astonished to find it almost full of black iron slime! Must have been collected during the flushing process. Cleaned it and looked at it again 18 months later and it had much less black slime; about 6mm all over the plastic carrier, so it's still working even though the system is full of inhibitor. I guess the inhibitor can't do anything about the metal particles that are floating around, which is where the Magnaclean protects by taking them out of circulation. I was concerned about the possible effect of heat on the magnet but it still seems as strong (and it's VERY strong) now as when it was new. Although expensive, it's worth it for the peace of mind that those iron particles are not getting into my condensing boiler and clogging up its tiny waterways, as well as giving the system a longer rad life. Only one problem - when I closed the valves (which were very stiff) to clean it, the valves dripped (even though I have the version with the improved PTFE seals) but fortunately they stopped dripping when I opened them.
Pros: nothing to report at present
Cons: the use of endfill copper fittings !!!!!!
What a nightmare! whilst the product may be good, why o why can't the makers supply the two copper fittings as yorkshire fittings instead of endfil.
Mine failed and leaked which meant I had to cut them out, buy more standard fittings and adjust all the pipework.
Clearly designed with plumbers in mind who are proficient at using endfill joints - a false economy in my view.
I haven't checked out how much gunge the filter has captured at this stage therefore don't know whether it is as efficient as promised.
Pros: Well built, easy to install and to clean. Clear instructions.
Cons: Rather pricy
Basically the Magnaclean is a sensible option to fit on any CH system. My collecting any deposits in your radiator system you are potentially saving yourself from grief. We had a new boiler and decided to install a Magnaclean at the same time.
