How do I choose the right kilowatt rating for my accessible electric shower, and will my existing wiring cope?

Look at the kW rating and match it to the length of the cable run from your consumer unit: for example an 8.5kW shower typically needs 6mm² cable for runs up to 18m and 10mm² for 18–35m, while 9.5kW and 10.5kW models generally require 10mm². If your run is longer than 35m a qualified electrician should check voltage drop and may specify 16mm². If you have a short run and modest hot-water expectations, an 8.5–8.7kW Mira or AKW model can be a good fit; larger properties or long runs usually benefit from 9.5kW or 10.5kW units.

I have limited grip and some visual impairment — are these showers easy and safe to use?

Yes. Many accessible electric showers in this range have looped control handles, large tactile buttons and clear temperature indicators, and 18 products are RNIB approved for easier use if you have visual impairments. Thermostatic technology keeps the water at a steady temperature so you do not get sudden hot or cold surges. For example, an AKW SmartCare or a Mira Advance model with tactile controls and an adjustable handheld head gives both grip-friendly operation and flexible reach.

What does thermostatic technology do and is a cool-touch bar useful for a vulnerable user?

Thermostatic technology maintains a steady set temperature even when water pressure changes, so you avoid sudden scalding or cold shocks during a shower. A cool-touch bar mixer adds an extra safety layer by keeping the exposed metal surface cooler to the touch, useful if you or the user have thin or sensitive skin. For care settings, thermostatic units such as the AKW iTherm or Triton Omnicare provide predictable temperatures while bar mixer kits add that tactile safety.

Should I buy a basic shower unit or a full care kit or lever model?

If mobility or dexterity is an issue you will benefit from a care kit or lever model because they come with larger controls, extended riser rails and specifically designed handsets; examples include the AKW SmartCare Plus and the SmartCare Lever ranges. A basic unit may suffice if you only need thermostatic control and a handheld head, but a full care kit gives easier reach, more accessible controls and colour-coded options such as chrome or white for visual contrast. Think about the user's daily needs: a seated bather typically finds an extended kit with an adjustable riser rail much easier to use.

Can these accessible showers work well in a wetroom, and which spray patterns are best for different needs?

Yes. The range includes adjustable riser rails and handheld shower heads that are ideal for wetrooms where you may shower seated or need a hose that reaches. You'll find showers with three or five spray patterns; a three-spray handset is great for a consistent, gentle wash, while a five-spray option offers a focused jet for rinsing hair or cleaning.
