How to Renovate Your Bathroom On a Budget...

Renovating a bathroom can seem daunting and expensive but it doesn’t have to be! You may be surprised how many budget-friendly updates are possible and, at just how easy it is to renovate your bathroom yourself.

Here are a few ideas on how to DIY your bathroom and create a beautiful, stylish and budget-friendly space to relax in.

The Planning Process

Planning is key to a successful project and it’s especially important when designing and renovating a bathroom.

One big tip to keep the renovation costs down is not to change the positions of your sanitary ware. Replacing things like your toilet or washbasin is surprisingly easy and affordable but moving their positions can quickly become very expensive as it requires changes to the pipework which is best left to the professionals.

Another way to reduce costs is by reusing what you already have. Maybe your wall-hung toilet has seen better days but you might not have to replace the concealed cistern and frame behind it. You may want to rip out and replace your washbasin but you could keep your vanity unit.

Think about exactly what you want your bathroom to look like, what you want to keep and what you want to change before you start the messy building work. Careful planning can save a lot of time and money in the long run!

Demolition

Even if you don't feel confident in replacing a whole bathroom yourself, there are a lot of DIY bathroom updates that even the most novice DIYer can do.

If you don’t know how to renovate a bathroom and you decide to pay a professional to carry out most of the work, you can still get stuck in and do the dirty demolition work yourself. Ripping out all of your fixtures and fittings, knocking tiles off the walls and getting rid of the rubble is hard work but will save you a lot of money.

Tiling

Retiling your bathroom will make a huge impact on the look and feel of your room. The cost of tiles, however, can vary significantly. There are some beautiful affordable tiles available but more high-end options can be pricey. An alternative to retiling your floor is to lay linoleum or vinyl flooring instead. There are hundreds of high-quality linoleum and vinyl floors to choose from and it’s really quick and easy to lay!

Another good DIY bathroom idea is to paint your bathroom tiles with some tile paint instead of completely renewing them. Specialist tile paints are available in most DIY stores and they are a great way to completely change the look of your bathroom on a budget.

To make your bathroom feel clean and fresh, renew your grout and silicone edging which, let’s face it, often has seen better days! Depending on the thickness of your existing grout you may even be able to apply a new layer straight over the top of the existing grout!

Nobody likes dirty and mouldy silicone edges but luckily it’s easy to remove and replace. Scrape it out with a sharp knife, wipe the surfaces clean and then apply a fresh new layer of silicone sealant. These small updates will help your bathroom feel clean, fresh and new.

Painting

If you’re looking for an even more budget-friendly DIY bathroom refresh. there's nothing quite like a coat of paint to give any room an almost instant and high-impact makeover.

It’s cheap, quick and easy to do! Best of all, it’s also something that can easily be changed so why not opt for a bold colour? Use paints that are specifically designed for use in bathrooms as they are moisture-resistant and protect against mould.

The Finishing Touches

Storage is often overlooked in bathrooms but it’s important to have enough space to hide all of your bathroom clutter.

A wall-hung vanity unit under your washbasin doesn’t take up much space and provides plenty of storage to stash all of your bathroom supplies. Wall-hung vanity units are also perfect for small bathrooms. They allow more floor area to be visible therefore creating the illusion of a more spacious room.
