First, identify your water system
UK homes use three main water-system types, and a fourth (low-pressure variations) that overlaps. You can usually tell which you have by looking in your airing cupboard or boiler space.

How to spot one: no hot-water tank anywhere in the house, just the boiler unit. If your boiler is in the kitchen or a utility cupboard and nothing else looks like a cylinder, you’re almost certainly on a combi.
Unvented mains-pressure system
A separate hot-water cylinder (often in an airing cupboard) that’s fed directly from the mains. The cylinder stores hot water and supplies it at mains pressure. These systems give plenty of stored hot water and good pressure throughout the house.
How to spot one: a hot-water cylinder with no cold-water tank in the loft, and usually a pressure-relief discharge pipe somewhere outside.
Gravity-fed system (vented)
The older traditional layout: a cold-water tank in the loft (or above the cylinder) feeds a hot-water cylinder below, and gravity provides the pressure. The further the tank sits above the shower, the better the pressure; in single-storey or low-loft homes, gravity pressure can be quite low.

Low water pressure

Low pressure: do you need a pump?
The short answer: only if your hot supply is too weak to drive a decent shower on its own, and you want a mixer rather than an electric. A pump isn’t a fix-all; it’s a specific solution for a specific situation.
You probably need a pump if you have a gravity-fed system, the cold tank doesn’t sit far enough above the shower head, and you want a mixer or thermostatic shower with proper flow. You can confirm by measuring the flow rate from your existing shower (a one-litre jug under the running showerhead, timed for thirty seconds, will tell you): less than about six litres per minute is the territory where a pump genuinely helps.
You probably don’t need a pump if you’re on a combi or an unvented mains system. Both deliver at mains pressure already, and adding a pump to a combi is sometimes actively discouraged by the manufacturer. If your pressure is poor on a combi or mains system, the issue is more likely with the incoming mains or the boiler than something a shower pump would solve.
The alternative to pumping is a power shower, which is a mixer shower with a built-in pump. That gives you the pumped flow without a separate pump installation, in a single tidy unit. If the work of fitting a separate pump puts you off, a power shower is often the easier route to the same result.

- Check the shower’s minimum pressure or flow rate. Every reputable shower lists a minimum supply pressure (in bar) or flow rate (in litres per minute) that it needs to work properly. If your system can’t hit that number, the shower won’t work as intended, no matter how good it looks.
- Check the shower’s system compatibility. Most manufacturers say which water-system types each model is approved for. If a shower’s spec sheet doesn’t mention gravity-fed compatibility, don’t assume it’ll work on one.
If you want to know your actual pressure rather than guess at it, a plumber can measure it with a gauge in a few seconds (typical UK mains pressure ranges from around 1 bar at the low end to about 5 bar at the high end, with most homes between 2 and 3 bar).
