Exposed vs concealed shower systems
Once you’ve chosen the type of shower (electric, mixer or thermostatic), the next decision is how it sits in the room. An exposed shower system has the valve and pipework visible on the wall; a concealed system hides them inside the wall, leaving only the controls and the shower head on show. Both work the same way underneath. The choice is mostly about look, install effort, and whether you’re renovating or replacing.

What each one is
An exposed shower system has the valve body, pipes and any riser rail fitted on the surface of the wall. You can see the chrome (or black, or brushed brass) bar across the wall, the valve in the middle, and the pipework connecting them. The whole assembly sits proud of the tiles.
A concealed shower system has all the same parts, but the valve and the supply pipes are built into the wall behind the tiles. From the room, you see only the control plate, the diverter (if there’s one), and the shower head or arm. The plumbing that makes it work is hidden in the wall cavity, so the wall reads as a clean, almost minimal surface with the shower mounted on it.
Both formats are available in electric, mixer and thermostatic variants. Both can include a fixed head, a handset, or both. So the format choice doesn’t lock you out of any feature; it’s about whether you want the plumbing visible or hidden.
The look
This is the obvious difference and the one most people decide on. An exposed system has clear shower-presence in the room: it’s visibly a piece of bathroom hardware, and the metalwork (chrome, matt black, brushed brass) is part of the room’s design. Done well, that’s a feature, not a fault — exposed valves look honest and intentional, especially in modern industrial or transitional schemes.
A concealed system is the minimalist answer. With the pipework hidden, what you see is closer to a sculpted detail than a piece of plumbing: a flat control plate against the wall, perhaps a slim diverter for the handset, and the shower head emerging from the ceiling or the wall. It’s the look that contemporary bathroom photography sells, and it’s the cleanest line you can get above a tray or enclosure.
Both can be beautiful; neither is more correct. Your choice depends on whether you want the shower to look like a deliberate piece of design hardware (exposed) or to disappear into the wall (concealed).
Install and maintenance access
Exposed shower systems are designed to retrofit. The valve and pipework mount on the surface of an existing finished wall, so the wall doesn’t need opening up. A competent fitter can swap an old exposed shower for a new one in a couple of hours, with no tiling work and no mess. If anything goes wrong with the valve later (a cartridge wears out, the thermostatic element fails) the valve is right there on the wall, ready to be unscrewed and serviced.
Concealed systems are designed to be built in. The valve mounts inside a stud wall or a recessed cavity in a solid wall, the supply pipes run through the wall to it, and the tiles go up around the control plate. That makes it a bigger job at install time, ideally done as part of a bathroom renovation when the wall is open anyway. Maintenance access is through the control plate, which lifts off to expose the valve for service. So concealed valves can be serviced, but the process is a bit more involved than reaching for an exposed one.
Most reputable concealed valves are designed with this in mind, and brands like Mira, Aqualisa and Hansgrohe specify how much clearance the install needs behind the plate so servicing is straightforward later. Worth knowing your fitter has read the manufacturer’s install guide for whichever valve you buy.
What kind of wall do you have?
The wall is the bit of the install that decides how easy a concealed system actually is to fit, and it’s the question that catches most homeowners out. Two main wall types in UK homes, and they affect the concealed-vs-exposed call:
- Stud wall (plasterboard on a timber or metal frame): the easiest wall for a concealed install. There’s already a cavity behind the plasterboard, the pipes can be routed through the studs, and the valve recesses into the depth that’s already there. Most modern bathrooms have at least one stud wall, often the one between rooms.
- Solid masonry wall (brick or block): needs chasing out (cutting a channel into the masonry) to accept the valve and pipes. That’s doable and standard practice for a renovation, but it’s real work that adds time and cost. For a like-for-like swap that doesn’t involve a renovation, exposed is much easier on a solid wall.
If you’re not sure which you have, tap the wall: stud sounds hollow, solid sounds, well, solid. A fitter can confirm in seconds. The wall type doesn’t rule concealed out, but it does change the cost and the time, so it’s worth knowing before you decide.
Replace or renovate?
This is the cleanest way to make the decision, because it ties the format to the project you’re actually doing rather than to abstract preference.
If you’re replacing an existing shower without changing the bathroom, choose exposed. The fit is a like-for-like swap onto your current pipework, the wall doesn’t need touching, and the project takes a morning instead of a week. The exposed format also gives you more flexibility on the brand and style of replacement because you’re not constrained to a specific valve depth or back-plate cutout.
If you’re renovating the bathroom anyway — fresh tiles, new layout, perhaps a new enclosure — concealed makes sense. The wall is open, the pipework can be planned cleanly, and the finished bathroom gets the minimalist look that justifies the work. It’s the moment to make the change; later on, it gets much harder.
The exception is a complete tile rip-out for an exposed shower. Some bathrooms get a renovation and still choose exposed because the design suits it (Victorian, country-cottage, industrial); the rule isn’t that renovating forces you to concealed, just that the choice is open in a way it isn’t during a basic swap.
