Mixer Showers: Everything You Need to Know Before Buying
A mixer shower mixes hot and cold water from your existing plumbing to give you the temperature you want at the showerhead. There’s no heating element inside the unit; the hot water has already been heated by your boiler or stored in a cylinder. That makes mixer showers simpler, usually quieter, and typically capable of a stronger flow than an electric shower. The catch is that they’re only as good as the hot-water supply they’re mixing.
How mixer showers work
Two pipes feed the mixer valve: one hot (from your boiler or cylinder), one cold (from the mains or a tank). Inside the valve, the two flows are blended to your chosen temperature, then sent up to the shower head. The flow rate and the temperature both depend on the pressure of the incoming supplies and how well they balance each other.
Because the water doesn’t need heating in the unit, mixer showers can deliver more litres per minute than an electric shower of the same physical size. That’s why the spa-feel high-flow showers in modern bathrooms are almost always mixer (often thermostatic) rather than electric. The flow potential is genuine, provided your hot supply is up to it.
Bar, exposed or concealed
Mixer showers come in three formats, and the choice is mostly about how the valve sits on the wall.
- Bar mixer. The standard format: a horizontal bar mounted on the wall, with the valve in the middle and the supplies coming up to it from below. Exposed, easy to fit, and the most widely available format.
- Exposed (non-bar). The valve and pipework are on the wall surface, but in a more vertical or compact arrangement than a bar. Common on traditional and budget mixers.
- Concealed. The valve is built into the wall, with only the control plate and shower head showing. Cleanest look but a bigger install job — best planned with a renovation.
Pressure and your system
A mixer shower is only as good as the water arriving at the valve. Honest read on which systems suit a mixer:
- Combi boiler or unvented mains-pressure system. Both deliver hot water at mains pressure, which is exactly what a mixer wants. A good thermostatic mixer on either system gives a strong, even flow.
- Gravity-fed system with good head height. A mixer can work, but check the spec — many mixers list a minimum pressure (often around 1 bar) and a gravity-fed system in a low-loft house may not reach it. If yours doesn’t, a pump or a power shower (pumped mixer) is the fix.
- Low-pressure systems generally. A standard mixer will struggle. An electric shower or a power shower is the practical alternative.

The thermostatic valve constantly adjusts the mix to hold the temperature steady, so the shower doesn’t scald when someone flushes a toilet or runs a tap. The price difference over a manual mixer is small and the safety benefit is genuine.
