A rainfall shower drops water over you in a wide, even pattern from a large overhead head, the closest thing a domestic bathroom gets to standing under proper rain. It’s the showpiece of a modern walk-in or wet room, and the experience most people picture when they think "luxury bathroom". Two things decide whether it actually works in your home: the head clearance above where you stand, and the flow your water system can deliver. Get both right and a rainfall shower is genuinely transformative.

What is a rainfall shower?

A rainfall shower has a large overhead head (usually 200mm to 400mm across) that drops water vertically over the user in a wide, soft pattern. The head is mounted either on a long wall arm that extends out from the wall, or on a ceiling drop that brings the head straight down from above. Either way, the water falls vertically rather than spraying at an angle, which is the feature that gives the rainfall its name.

Most rainfall heads are paired with a thermostatic valve and often a handset on a hose (making it a dual-outlet system), so you get the rainfall experience with a practical handset for hair-washing or rinsing. Standalone rainfall-only systems also exist for the cleanest, most minimal look. The size and the mounting method are the variables that shape the experience.

Head height and clearance

This is the single most important check before you buy. A rainfall shower head needs enough height above the user to deliver the rainfall effect properly. As a rough rule:

  • Minimum 2.1 metres from the floor to the underside of the head, so the average adult has clearance.
  • 2.2 to 2.3 metres is more comfortable and gives the head room to fan the water properly before it reaches you.
  • Ceiling-mounted heads need 2.3 metres or more, since they’re dropping straight down rather than extending out from the wall.

In a low-ceiling bathroom (typical UK ceilings can be just 2.4 metres), a wall-arm rainfall head with a short drop is usually a better fit than a ceiling-mounted one. If you’re tall, prioritise the higher figure. The measurement that matters is finished floor to underside of head, with the head in its installed position — not the bracket position on the wall.

Flow and pressure

A wide rainfall head needs more water to feel right than a focused conventional head. Spread thinly across 250mm, a 9 litre-per-minute flow that would feel powerful from a normal head feels like a drizzle from a rainfall. The numbers that matter:

  • At least 1 bar pressure, typically 2 bar or more for a satisfying rainfall feel. Combi boilers and unvented mains-pressure systems usually deliver this comfortably; gravity-fed systems often don’t.
  • Flow rate around 12 to 15 litres per minute is the territory where a rainfall feels genuinely powerful. Below 9 litres per minute the head will feel weak no matter how good it is.
  • Gravity-fed systems often need a pump to get a rainfall head working well, or a power shower (mixer with built-in pump). An electric shower can’t feed a rainfall head properly — the heating element constrains the flow.

If you’re unsure of your pressure, measure the flow from your existing shower with a one-litre jug under the head, timed for thirty seconds. Less than six litres per minute means a rainfall head will struggle without help; ten litres or more means you’re in the territory where rainfall delivers.

Match to your enclosure or walk-in

A rainfall head is at its best in a walk-in or a wet room, where there’s space around the user and no enclosure top to interfere with the water’s natural fall. In a standard enclosure (typically 800 by 800mm or 900 by 900mm), a 250mm rainfall head is the practical maximum — bigger heads start to feel cramped or spray the door. In a 1200mm-wide walk-in, 300mm heads work well; in larger wet rooms, 400mm becomes possible.

Pair the rainfall with a handset on a hose if you want both the showpiece experience and practical day-to-day use. Single-head rainfall systems look the cleanest, but the handset is more useful day-to-day than people expect — for washing hair, rinsing the cubicle, or controlling exactly where the water goes.

Not easily. A rainfall head needs decent pressure (at least 1 bar, ideally 2 bar+) to spread the water properly. On a gravity-fed system with low head height, you’ll need a shower pump or a power shower to make a rainfall head feel right. Worth confirming with a plumber before you commit.

Wall arm or ceiling-mounted rainfall?

Wall arm is the easier fit in most UK bathrooms because it doesn’t need to go through the ceiling. Ceiling-mounted is the cleanest, most architectural look but needs the ceiling void above the bathroom to take the pipework, and the ceiling height to drop the head far enough.
