A dual outlet shower gives you two ways to shower from the same valve: a fixed overhead head (often a rainfall design) for a full-body soak, and a handset on a hose for rinsing, washing your hair, or cleaning the cubicle afterwards. A diverter on the valve switches between them, or runs both at once. It’s the experience upgrade most modern thermostatic showers offer as standard — but it needs the flow to deliver. What dual outlet means
A dual outlet shower has two water outlets fed from the same thermostatic valve. The first outlet is a fixed overhead head, usually mounted on a wall arm or a ceiling drop, and usually a wider rainfall design. The second is a handset on a hose, typically mounted on a riser rail or wall bracket, so you can lift it down and direct the water where you want it. Both heads use the same hot/cold mix from the valve, so the temperature is the same whichever outlet you’re using.
"Dual function" is sometimes used interchangeably, but it can also describe a system with two different spray patterns from the same head (rain plus mist, for example). For most UK shoppers, dual outlet and dual function point at the same product category: one valve, two outlets, your choice of which to use.
The diverter
The diverter is the part that decides which outlet the water goes to. On a typical dual outlet shower, it’s a small lever or knob next to the temperature control. Pulled or twisted one way, the water comes out of the fixed head; the other way, it comes out of the handset. Some diverters also have a middle position where water flows to both outlets at the same time.
Three things to know about diverters:
- They sit on the valve, not on a separate plate, so the controls stay in one place. Easy to use one-handed.
- On a thermostatic system, the temperature stays the same when you switch outlets, because the valve keeps doing its job regardless of which outlet is active. No need to reset the temperature mid-shower.
- Diverters do wear out over the life of a shower, more so than the thermostatic valve itself. A diverter that’s become stiff or leaks past is a known service item; on reputable brands the part is available and the swap is straightforward.
Do you have the flow for it?
This is the honest question the brochures often skip. A dual outlet system has to deliver enough water to make each outlet feel right, and if you run both at once, it has to deliver twice as much. On a strong combi or unvented mains-pressure system with good mains pressure, that’s easy — a 12–15 litre-per-minute mixer can comfortably run a rainfall head and a handset together. On a weaker system, a dual outlet shower can feel underwhelming on either outlet, and combining them drops the flow on both.
Three practical checks:
- Single outlet at a time: most modern thermostatic systems will deliver a good shower from either the rainfall or the handset on its own, provided you have at least 1 bar of pressure.
- Both outlets together: this is where flow matters. If you want to use both at once (often in a walk-in or wet room), make sure your supply can carry the combined draw, or accept that the experience will be softer than running one at a time.
- Gravity-fed systems: a dual outlet is workable but often needs a pump or a power shower to give a satisfying experience on both outlets. An electric shower won’t typically offer dual outlet because the heating element constrains the flow.
