What a thermostatic shower does
Inside the valve, a temperature-sensitive element reacts in real time to the temperature of the water flowing past it. If the cold pressure drops (or the hot pressure changes), the valve restricts the hot side to compensate, keeping the mixed temperature at the figure you set. It does this constantly while the shower’s running, so you barely notice when something elsewhere in the house changes.
A non-thermostatic (manual) mixer doesn’t do any of this. It blends hot and cold in the proportions you’ve set, and if either side changes, the resulting temperature changes too. Anti-scald safety
The thermostatic valve does two safety jobs that a manual mixer can’t. Second, if the cold supply fails completely (a frozen pipe, an emptied tank, someone shutting off the cold elsewhere), the valve shuts the shower off rather than sending unmixed hot water at the user.
