How to choose a shower for your enclosure & tray
Most shower-buying guides answer one of two questions: which type of shower to buy, or which finish to pick.
They skip the question that decides whether the result actually works in your space, which is whether the shower fits the enclosure and tray you’re fitting it over.
A 400mm rainfall head in a 800mm cubicle wastes water on the door. A wall-arm head in a low-ceiling bathroom catches the back of a tall user’s head. A handset on a riser rail mounted on the wrong wall makes a tray feel cramped. None of these is the shower’s fault they’re fit problems.

Start with your space
UK home showers sit in one of four space types, and each asks slightly different things of the hardware.

Rainfall head clearance
This is the single most-skipped check on a rainfall shower, and the one that catches the most installs out. A rainfall head needs height above the user to fan the water properly before it reaches them; mount it too low and you get a heavy splash rather than a rainfall feel. The clearance numbers that matter, measured from the finished floor to the underside of the head:

Two things to know about these numbers.
First, the measurement is to the underside of the head, with the head in its installed position not the bracket where it attaches to the wall or ceiling.
Second, a standard UK ceiling is around 2.4 metres, which leaves limited room for a ceiling-mounted head once you account for the head depth and the user height. In a low-ceiling bathroom, a wall-arm rainfall with a short drop is usually a better fit than a ceiling-mounted one.
Matching to tray size and outlet position
The tray decides three things about the shower: how big the head can sensibly be, where the controls should sit, and whether the layout will feel cramped or comfortable in use.
On head size: aim for a head that covers a good proportion of the tray width but leaves a margin to avoid spraying the glass or the door. As a guide, a 200mm rainfall head suits an 800mm tray, a 250mm head suits a 900mm tray, a 300mm head suits a 1000–1200mm walk-in, and 400mm heads need a wet room or a large walk-in to make sense. Over-sized heads in tight enclosures waste water on the door — most of the spray ends up on the glass rather than the user.
On controls and outlet position: the shower should be aimed at the tray from the wall opposite the entry, not the wall next to the door.
Two reasons.
First, you walk past the controls to step into the shower, which means the water isn’t running across the entry while you’re mid-step.
Second, you face into the shower with your back to the door, which is the natural showering position. If your existing pipework forces the controls to the wrong wall, a fitter can re-route in most cases, but it’s easier to plan it right from the start.
Walk-in and wet-room layouts
These open layouts deserve a section of their own because they change what the shower has to do. With no door and an open front, the showering zone needs to keep water inside without the help of an enclosure boundary — so head positioning and spray pattern matter more than they would in a cubicle.

How to match a shower to your enclosure
A five-step process to get the right shower for your space:
Step 1. Identify your space type (standard enclosure, walk-in, wet room, or over-bath). The space type sets the suitable shower formats. A walk-in benefits from a dual-outlet thermostatic; an over-bath usually wants a single-outlet mixer with a handset on a rail.
Step 2. Measure your ceiling height to the finished floor. This decides whether a rainfall head is realistic and whether it should be wall-arm or ceiling-mounted. Below 2.3 metres, choose a wall-arm rainfall with a short drop or a conventional fixed head.
Step 3. Measure your tray (or walk-in zone). The tray width sets the maximum head size: 200mm head on an 800mm tray, 250mm on 900mm, 300mm on 1000–1200mm, 400mm in a larger walk-in or wet room.
Step 4. Plan where the controls and head go. Aim for the wall opposite the entry, with the controls reachable without stepping into the spray. If your existing pipework doesn’t match, get a fitter to advise on whether re-routing is sensible.
Step 5. Choose the format that suits the space and your water system. Walk-in and wet room: thermostatic dual-outlet, exposed bar or concealed. Standard enclosure: thermostatic mixer in any format. How much head height do I need for a rainfall shower?
At least 2.1 metres from the finished floor to the underside of the head for an average adult, with 2.2 to 2.3 metres more comfortable. Taller users and ceiling-mounted rainfall heads need 2.2 to 2.3 metres minimum. In a low-ceiling bathroom (UK standard around 2.4 metres), choose a wall-arm rainfall with a short drop.
What size rainfall shower head fits an 800mm tray?
Around 200mm, sometimes up to 250mm if the tray is square rather than narrow. Anything larger ends up spraying the glass door or the cubicle walls rather than the user. The wider the tray, the bigger the head you can sensibly fit.
Where should the shower controls go in an enclosure?
On the wall opposite the entry, not next to the door. That way you walk past the controls into the spray rather than reaching across it, and the natural showering position has the user facing into the cubicle. Most existing pipework can be re-routed if the controls are on the wrong wall.
Can I fit a rainfall shower over a bath?
