Shower wall panels

A shower wall takes more water than any other surface in the house, day after day. That is the worry behind the question everyone asks first: are shower wall panels really waterproof?

Shower Wall Panel

The short answer is yes.

They are made for direct spray, they seal at the joints with trims instead of grout, and there is no grout line for water to get behind or for mould to grow in. This page sets out the proof, then the practical detail on sizes, fitting and finishes.

Are shower wall panels waterproof?

Yes. Shower wall panels are 100% waterproof and designed for direct shower spray. They seal at the joints with matching trims and sealant, so the whole wall keeps water out, not just the face of it. With no grout to crack or wear away, there is nothing to fail and nothing to re-seal each year.

For the full detail on shower zones and how to seal the joints properly, see the guide on whether bathroom wall panels are waterproof

Why use panels in a shower instead of tiles?

A tiled shower fails at the grout first. Grout discolours, cracks and lets water creep behind the tiles, which is where the mould and the costly repairs start. Panels remove the grout entirely, which solves the problem at its source:

  • No grout to mould. Nothing to discolour along the joints and nothing to scrub with a brush every week.
  • Faster to fit. A shower wall goes up in a few large boards instead of dozens of tiles, often over a single day.
  • Wipe clean. A soft cloth and a mild detergent keep the surface clear; there are no grout lines holding limescale.

The same holds for an over-bath shower, where the worst grout failures usually start. A single panelled run behind the bath removes the row of joints that water attacks first.

Sizes and fitting for shower enclosures

Shower panels are sold full height so a single board can run from tray to ceiling with no horizontal join in the wettest zone. They fit with corner trims and internal joints, sealed as you go, and can usually go straight over existing, sound tiles. Here is how a panelled shower compares with a tiled one on the upkeep that actually wears people down:

Upkeep Panelled shower Tiled shower
Grout None Re-seal as it ages
Mould risk Low, no grout lines Higher along joints
Weekly clean Quick wipe Scrub the grid
Joins in wet zone Sealed full-height board Many grout lines

Typical heights run to 2400mm with widths from roughly 598mm to 1200mm. Cross-check the fit for a wet room, and follow the method in how to install bathroom wall panels

How the joints stay watertight

The waterproofing lives in three places. The board itself is solid and waterproof through its whole thickness. The joints between boards lock together with a tongue-and-groove or H-trim profile and a bead of sealant, so water cannot track between them. The corners and edges finish with matching trims that seal the panel to the tray, the ceiling and the adjacent wall. Get those three right on fitting and the shower wall is watertight for the life of the panels, with no annual re-sealing. The install and waterproofing guides walk through each step.

Shower panel finishes

Waterproof does not mean plain. Shower panels come in the same effects as the rest of the range, so the wettest wall in the house can also be the best-looking one. Marble effect gives a hotel feel, stone and slate effects suit a calm spa look, and tile effect keeps the classic look of tiles without the grout. We stock shower-rated ranges from names including Multipanel, Naturepanel and Starline. Order a sample first so you can see the finish in your own light, against the suite and the tray you already have. Browse marble effect panels or stone effect panels for a feature shower wall (both linking when live).

Shower wall panel FAQs

Are shower wall panels completely waterproof?

Yes. They are designed for direct shower spray and seal at the joints with trims and sealant, with no grout to fail. Fitted and sealed correctly, the whole wall stays watertight.

Do shower wall panels need grout?

No. They fit with sealed joints and trims instead of grout, so there is nothing to scrub each week and nothing to re-seal each year. That is the main reason people switch from tiles.

Can I fit shower panels over my existing tiles?

Usually yes, onto a flat, sound, well-stuck tiled wall. The install guide covers the method and the trims you need for the corners and edges.
