How do I know whether I need an angled, corner or straight thermostatic valve for my radiator?

Look at how your pipework meets the radiator. If the pipe runs along the wall and enters the radiator from the side, a straight valve is usually right; if the pipe comes up from the floor beneath the side inlet, an angled valve suits best. Corner valves are designed for pipework that comes from the wall to a bottom inlet or runs along the wall to a bottom-entry radiator. a towel radiator with pipework running horizontally along the wall will commonly take a straight valve, whereas a floor-fed side inlet needs an angled valve.

What connection size should I buy and how common is 15mm?

Most thermostatic radiator valves on offer are 15mm, so that's the common size for modern central heating pipework. The range also includes smaller 8mm and 10mm options and a few other sizes, so measure your pipe or check an existing valve before ordering. If your pipes are 15mm (typical for many homes), you'll have the widest choice of finishes and styles.

Can I get valves that match my radiator's style and finish?

Are smart thermostatic radiator valves available and what do they let you do?

Smart radiator valves are available from brands like Worcester Bosch, Honeywell and Netatmo and let you control temperatures remotely and often schedule heating per room. You can buy individual smart valves or multi-packs such as a three-valve Worcester Bosch set for whole-room control. If you want zone control and the convenience of app scheduling, a smart option will suit you; if you prefer simplicity, traditional thermostatic valves still give accurate, local temperature regulation.

Do I need a lockshield with my TRV and how will that affect performance?

Yes, a lockshield is normally used alongside a TRV to balance the radiator system: the TRV controls room temperature while the lockshield sets the flow through the radiator. Many valve packs include a matching lockshield, which simplifies matching finishes and ensures you have both components. fitting a thermostatic valve on one side and the included lockshield on the other helps you get steady temperatures without visual mismatch.
