Stainless Steel Sinks - Things To Consider

Perhaps the obvious thing is the style and the configuration, i.e. one bowl, one and a half bowl or two bowl, with or without drainer, etc. However, when it comes to assessing quality the things to keep in mind are:

The Thickness of the Stainless Steel

Generally the more expensive the sink the thicker the stainless steel used. Thicker steel, also referred to as higher gauge, is more rigid so gives a solid feel when installed and that quality look that we all strive for. Thicker stainless steel is also more resistant to dents and, perhaps not so obviously, has better sound insulation, i.e. the sink will be less "noisy" when washing dishes or operating your waste disposal unit. Be careful of unbranded products that may be imported from the far east and be a lot thinner gauge, and cosequently more flimsy, than a well known brand.

The Grade (Quality) of the Stainless Steel

Stainless steel comes in different grades, usually designated by their chromium-to-nickle ratio. A stainless steel ratio of 18/8 means 18% chromium and 8% nickel present. The higher the percentage of these elements, the better the stainless steel grade. High quality 18/10 stainless steel gives a high level of stain, corrosion and rust resistance. Low quality sinks can be identified by holding a magnet against them. High quality stainless steel will stick to a magnet, lower quality steel won't.
