What is a hot water cylinder used for?

A hot water cylinder stores an ample amount of your hot water so you can ensure that you’ll always have enough to enjoy your long relaxing shower. There’s nothing worse than hopping in the shower after someone else and there’s hardly any hot water left, meaning you have to frustratingly cut your shower short and not get that revitalizing burst you wanted.

A hot water cylinder will store enough hot water so you’re able to enjoy a long hot shower even if someone else has already had a bath or shower before you! But with the different types of cylinders such as vented or unvented, direct or indirect, we’re going to explain what each is so you know which one you need for your home.

Vented or Unvented Cylinder?

Vented cylinders need a separate tank (usually located in your loft) which supplies cold water to your mains supply. This provides the hot water supply to the cylinder by using a gravity fed system to deliver your hot water to your household which also provides the hot water supply to the cylinder. Vented cylinders are usually used with regular boiler installations.

If you haven’t got room in your loft for a feeder tank, then an unvented hot water cylinder is the best choice for you as it doesn’t need a separate tank to get its cold water.

Unvented cylinders use your mains water pressure to disperse hot water around your household to your hot water outlets (your taps, shower etc). As you are getting your water directly from your mains, you can take advantage of the high-pressure water supply which will give you a powerful shower you can enjoy day in and day out. Unvented cylinders are commonly used with system boiler installations.

The water inside a direct hot water cylinder is heated by the cylinder itself. Inside the cylinder there is an immersion heater which is used to heat the water, eliminating the need of boilers or solar panels to generate the hot water.

Indirect hot water cylinders need an external appliance to produce heat for the cylinder which generates the hot water which is stored inside. The water is generally heated by a boiler and in some instances a solar panel installation. There is a heat exchanger inside the cylinder which transfers the heat from the external source (boiler) to the cylinder.

Also, indirect cylinders are usually fitted with a direct backup inside (such as an immersion heater), so if your boiler breaks you can still produce hot water!

What brands are recommended?

When it comes down to which brand to purchase your hot water cylinder from, it all depends on your personal preferences. Here are 3 brands we would recommend based on their high quality construction and innovative designs.

Heatrae Sadia - Megaflo
