When you live in a house for a long time, you may learn to put up with those little annoying bugbears because its too much effort to get them sorted. However, many people forget the benefit of ironing out these little problems, and it isn’t until they’re fixed that you realize how annoying they were.
Let’s take a look at some bathroom-related jobs that you’ve been putting off doing, or jobs that simply passed you by.
“I’m under pressure! Oh, wait… I’m not!
One of these jobs is the loss of pressure in a shower. There are many ways you can improve your low water pressure, from allowing your family to take back to back showers by installing a bigger water heater with more capacity, through to installing a thermostatic mixing valve. There are, as usual, a few things to take into account when choosing which option to take. Obviously it will cost more to replace your water heater, although this is a good way to keep the amount of hot water you need and will benefit you in the long run. If your water heater is nearing its age limit of about 9 or 10 years then this is the best option to take
The less expensive option is to install a thermostatic mixing valve whilst turning up the temperature on your water heater. You could just turn up the temperature of the water heater without the mixing valve; however this is considered dangerous and is never advised. The reasoning being is that by using a mixer valve you increase the energy that is stored in the tank, effectively increasing the capacity of the heater as you can use less water from the heater to mix with cold water to get the temperature you require for whatever use you have.
A thermostatic mixing valve has two inlets, one for hot water, and one for cold water and an outlet that dispenses a mix of the two. If you intend to turn your water heater over 120 degrees, you absolutely must have a mixer valve, to ensure it is never this temperature water reaching the tap, and therefore avoid nasty burns.
