In recent decades we have witnessed the rise and rise of the designer kitchen, with swanky bespoke installers taking over more and more High Street units and offering to transform your food preparation experience. And with the popularity of the Great British Bake-Off, Master Chef and many other cookery programmes, who wouldn’t aspire to a kitchen worthy of a visit from Mary Berry or Gordon Ramsey?
All of which was leaving the poor bathroom somewhat out in the cold. Where are The Great British Bathe-Off or Come Wash With Me to be found in the TV schedules?
Fortunately, the fitted furniture designers have stepped up to the mark and begun to work their magic on the Great British Bathroom, offering a wide array of fitted units that not only look really cool but also hide away all your family’s clutter, to give you a chance of that Good Housekeeping seal of approval.
Looking at those on offer at Plumbworld (and who wouldn’t?) the choice covers all the bases.
When the secluded Amish community in the USA started to build their Shaker furniture they surely never imagined that they would be emulated by factory-made clean, classic bathroom cabinets, especially ones that conceal a push-button, dual-flush toilet control. Yet such is the case. These clean white units are complemented by Indian granite worktops.
A wood effect can be had, such as the light Tahiti Oak, and consider using a real statement piece in the form of a 640mm tall mirror door cabinet that can be installed double-height to make shaving or make-up that much easier as well as adding spaciousness to the room. Alternatively you can go for a more mahogany look (without endangering tropical hardwoods) by selecting the Zanzibar units.
Ionian Pear stands for a blond set of cabinets with a soft, radiused-edge finish that is as child and elderly-friendly as it is stylish.
Java marries the timeless Shaker cabinet design with a Wisconsin Walnut colour and a concave satin nickle handle.
The difference from your oak kitchen is that these units are specifically designed for the rigours of the damp shower room or ensuite conditions. Whereas solid wood would tend to warp and swell, all these cabinets are manufactured from 15mm high density melamine faced particle board, designed with cam & dowel construction for extra rigidity.
Their all-metal 110° opening clip-on hinges have three-way adjustment. And you get that same soft close action that you love in your kitchen.
As you might expect, the systems are all compatible with all leading back-to-wall sanitaryware products.
The wall units are made easy to fit by the use of concealed, three way adjustable wall hanging brackets. You don’t have the usual Scandinavian self-assembly mysteries to unravel, either – these cabinets all come ready-assembled. Phew…
‘But’, I hear some of you cry, ‘I don’t like wood-look doors – give me colour!’ Then welcome to Sicily – not literally, but we can all dream. This is the name for the deep ruby red, clean-lined high gloss finish that creates a truly unique bathroom look. Too radical for you? Then stay with the ever-popular white look but in a glossy contemporary interpretation. Ideal for rental houses or fixer-uppers – or just because you like it…
